Book Club

8 Mar 2010

Mar. 8, Mon, 7pm Book Club    The House on Sugar Hill by Helene Cooper. Cooper wrote a gripping memoir that is not only a family history, but a social, cultural and historical account of Liberia. Cooper is a direct descendant of the first black Americans who migrated to Liberia in the 1820s to establish a haven for freed blacks. On April 12 The Trunk Murderess: Winnie Ruth Judd, in which the author Jana  Bommersbach attempts to reveal the truth about a notorious murder case that took place in Phoenix in 1931. Bernbach, a journalist, sorts through numerous documents and talks to several witnesses, including the accused, Winnie Ruth Judd. The book details the mishandling of evidence in the murder investigation and the motives for a possible political cover-up at the trial. The book also reveals something about the soul of investigative journalists. Bernbach was determined to correct the historical inaccuracies of this case.
